Here’s our ultimate guide to get makeup out of carpet

  • You will need:

  • Plain, white cloth or non-dyed absorbent kitchen paper

  • Plain lukewarm water

  • Cornstarch

  • Carpet cleaner

With it’s oily texture and orange tint, foundation is a carpet’s worst enemy. When you discover a blob of foundation on the carpet it’s easy to panic and start scrubbing furiously, but don’t. Take a deep breath and follow these easy instructions on how to get foundation out of carpet:

Step 1: Remove any excess foundation

If you’ve just made a fresh foundation carpet stain, the first thing to do is dab up any excess. Using a plain cloth or a piece of non-dyed absorbent kitchen paper, gently dab up an extra foundation working from the outside of the stain inwards. This will help avoid the stain spreading.

Step 2: Soak in Lukewarm Water

Some foundations can be dissolved in warm water, so try applying a small amount of water and continue gently dabbing up the stain with your plain cloth. You may need to rotate your cloth to use clean areas as you go, until you’ve absorbed as much of the stain as possible.

Step 3: Apply Potato Starch

Sprinkle a layer of cornstarch over the area and leave it to sit for 2 – 24 hours. Cornflour is a great absorbent and will help draw any remaining oily residue, water and odour out of the carpet. After you’ve allowed it to sit for as long as you can, vacuum the starch away.

Step 4: Apply Carpet Stain Remover

If you are still left with a remnant stain, a carpet stain remover solution can help dissolve any remaining foundation. Apply your stain remover using the manufacturer's instructions and leave to soak if needed. Make sure you check the care guide instructions for your carpet before applying a cleaning solution, and test in an inconspicuous area first if in doubt. After application, dab again with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residue.

Now you know how to get foundation out of carpet! So long as you’re patient and persistent with it, a foundation stain should be entirely removable.
